Case report presentations
Information and Submission Guidelines for Case Reports
· Unique and interesting case management scenarios are encouraged for submission. There is no limitation to the species or specific scenario. Ideal case presentations may originate from any one of the Internal Medicine subcategories of Cardiology, Large Animal Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology or Small Animal Internal Medicine or from Nutrition.
· Ideally, guest lectures have little to no lecture experience. We wish to make this a learning experience for those individuals that might be considering lecturing in the future.
· Candidates should be certified veterinary technicians (CVT, LVT, AHT, RVT, or credential by country of origin).
· All cases must first be assessed by a licensed DVM or if applicable a board certified specialist (ACVIM, ACVECC, etc.). The doctor/assessor is required to initially ensure the quality of the case report being submitted
· Candidates who are selected to present at ACVIM will be mentored to assist in final preparation of the case for presentation if an internal mentor is not available
· Please submit a 1 – 2 page synopsis of the case using the following outline:
o Title (This title should be informative to the individual reading the title. Unique or catchy titles are suitable only as the subtitle to the case)
o Introduction (including the unique or interesting aspect of the case)
o Signalment
o Presenting complaint
o Initial assessment
o Physical findings
o Nursing care treatment plan and your role in the care
o Nursing care progress
o Final Outcome
o Discussion: Should center around specific nursing care assessment, intervention, nursing care plan, as they pertain to the case being presented
o Conclusion: Should also include key nursing care points learned from the case, special skills and/or specialized monitoring equipment utilized during the case management
· Presentation format should be similar as the synopsis submission. Presentations are limited to a total of 20 minutes each: 15 minute presentation with 5 minutes permitted for questions from the audience. Each presentation will be timed so that all case reports can be presented in the allotted time.
· A computer generated projection (power point) is required and a laptop will be provided. The set up time and proper functioning of the computer program is the responsibility of the presenter. The case report moderator will meet you before your presentation and pre-load your presentation on the desktop of the computer.
· Each case report will be evaluated by independent individuals and an award will be given to the overall best presentation. Evaluation guidelines will include the unique qualities of the case, the actual presentation quality, ability to present within the allotted time frame and response to questions to the audience.
· The criteria to evaluate the content of the case will be:
o The case exemplifies the use and application of a high degree of veterinary nursing skills and assessment.
o The case demonstrates that positive patient outcome was in part linked to nursing care provided.

Deadline for submission is April 1st, 2012. The authors of all case reports that are accepted will be notified by April 10th, 2012.
